Orange Models - FAQ's and Scam/ Rip-off Prevention Advice

Legitimate agencies make their money by taking a percentage from models and clients off the work they book. Agencies make 40% to 50 % of each booking. As a standard – many agencies take 20% to 30% from the model (commission) and another 20% from the client (agency fee). That is how an agency makes their money!

Many prospective models are confused by mixed messages in the industry on what to look out for to prevent them from a scam.

SOME COMMON INDUSTRY MISCONCEPTIONS AND FAQ’S

# 1 Do I need to spend lots of money to be a model in Canada?

Models are self employed and work as independent contractors. You are starting your own business, therefore like any business you must invest for your business to succeed.

# 2 If an agency likes you, you shouldn’t have to pay for anything, right?

WRONG!

This is a common misconception. When an agency takes you on there are costs associated with representing you.  These costs may include printing your portfolio photos, setting up a test shoot with hair stylists, makeup artists and photographers.  Other costs may include couriers, internet site upkeep, agency promotions.  And others may include travel and accommodation.

Whether you pay for these costs upfront or the agency advances them for you, you always pay for them one way or another.  And that is that! Orange does not advance money to any new models; however we do make exceptions for experienced models.

# 3 Do I have to have a portfolio?

A portfolio is a model's book that is built up over time, not in one day. In order for any agency to start marketing you, you will need a least a few good pictures. For fashion models in particular, it is a lengthy and expensive procedure but is necessary to stay competitive and working. For some models, particularly those seeking work in television, fashion shows & promotions, A portfolio may not always be required. However it is proof of a models experience.

# 4 Do I need experience?

As with any business, experience is helpful but not necessarily a requirement.

# 5 Does Orange Models' do television commercials, music videos and film?
